Race review: Peninsula Marathon (42.2 km) - 19.02.2012

Due to the Red Hill Marathon I was already qualified for the Two Oceans Ultra.
Therefore I had only two goals for today's race:
1. get more distance onto my clock and 2. get a better seeding for the Comrades by running a sub 3h40min.
I achieved both of these goals ;)

You might have noticed my goal of a sub 3h30min marathon for 2012. Due to my pace at training runs and the heat again of 22°C at 5:15 o'clock at the start it was obvious, that I couldn't go for a sub 3h30 today.

The Peninsula Marathon starts close to the Worldcup Stadium in Cape Town, through the City Bowl and along the Two Oceans Ultra route for quite some time, until you head towards the Naval Base of Simonstown.
It's a beautiful run, but well known for very windy conditions. But not 2012. It was perfect for running, except for the heat.

The Peninsula Marathon comes with a Half Marathon as well, which starts 1h45min after the Marathon and the runners meet right after the half way mark of the Marathon. Very nice, except if you are a bit too slow on your full marathon and run right into the large group of "walkers" at the end of the half marathon field.
It's been not too bad for me and it took me approx 1.5 km to get around and through the slower half marathon runners.

Last year I blew my Peninsula, where I ran the first half in 1h42 and the second in 2h!
This time it was a 1h47 first and a 1h49 second, and I finished in 3h36min.

Now I'm lucky having achieved my two goals and ready to relax, before I head back into the snowy conditions in Europe.

Distance: 42.2 km
Time: 3h 36min 10sec
Pace: 5:07 min/km
Average Heart Rate: 166
